After the war, suddenly the setting changes to the civil war between the KMT and the Communist Party.  Soldier, Jiang Cheng-Zhang enlists into the army on his way home from school.  He does not know much; all he can think about is that he did not inform his family that he was safe and alive.  Xie Guan-Sheng's monologue in this scene is a highlight of the first half of the opera.
